Populonia was an ancient Etruscan city, the only sea.
Situated on a hilltop surrounded by the sea
preserves the medieval walls built for protection from pirates
and the defense complex of the fortress built in the first half of the fifteenth century and restored in 1800.
Inside the walls there is a quaint little town which has elegant shops, from the top of the fortress, overlooking a unique panorama of the Tuscan Archipelago.
